It is a known fact that the letters pages of newspapers is more read than editorials in the same newspaper.

Newspapers and the media in general want your feedback on what they are presenting or what interests the public. All you have to do is take the time to tell them.

Many government officials get daily reports on what has been written in the newspapers said on radio or shown on TV. They want to know what public opinion is. They need to know what public opinion is and how well they are thought to be doing. No political party is stupid enough to go against public opinion that has strong backing.

Therefore if you want your voice to be heard then you have to make it heard. Do not leave this up to the lobby groups because most of these do not have your best interests at heart.

Writing letters is one way of making your opinion known to many others including those that really need to know.

• Letters to the media should be short and to the point.
• The first paragraph must be interesting to gain the attention of the reader.
• Tell it like it is, your feelings, your opinion, your fears.
• The media wants to know what you think and want.
• Be polite and don't be abusive.
• Write as soon as you can if it is based on what was published.
• Base your letter on a published article or hot topic if possible.
• Do not be afraid to use slogans, do not repeat the slogans of opposing lobby groups.
• Take a snipe at lobby organisations by all means. e.g. Grief For South Africa or Gangsters and Criminals Alliance. Do not get personal.
• Be sure to compliment when deserved
• Attack the lies and fallacies.
• There is nothing to be gained by attacking the media, staff or opponent.
• Form a small group of interested people to discuss ideas for letters.
